Q1–Q8Listening practice
How to use this set. Each recording already plays the text twice, as in the exam, with a pause between the readings. Answer the question first, and only then open the transcript to check what you missed. These 8 items are drawn from the bank for this topic — they are practice, not a whole paper, but each one matches the marks and text type of its kind of HSC question.

Why did Xiao Qing not tell her friends?2
How to answer. Two marks means two reasons. One is about her friends, the other is about who she did tell and why that was enough. Keep listening after the first line.

Her friends had all done badly this time and telling them would only make them feel worse, and she had already told her mother — her mother being pleased was enough, so the whole class did not need to know.

How to answer. One of the three marks is for the summarising itself — putting it in your own words rather than writing down every word. The bullets tell you how many points to make: two bullets, two points. He marks them with 第一 … 第二 … 第三.

It may be used to help you work out how to start, but not to write the work for you; if you use it you must say so at the end and explain what you used it for; and it may not be used for homework set before a test, because that work is your own practice.

How does Xiao Sheng feel about it? Support your answer with reference to the text.3
How to answer. Three marks and 'support your answer', so give his feelings AND the detail that shows them. His feelings at the time and his feelings now are different — an answer with only one of them cannot reach full marks.

the answer itselfevidence from the textwhy it matters

He was not pleased even though the teacher praised the work, because he had not written it himself: when she read his paragraph out to the class he wanted to leave the room. Now he writes his own work and it is not as good, but he says that when the teacher praises it he can look at her — so he feels better about weaker work that is his own than about strong work that was not.

Compare and contrast the two speakers' views on posting photos of friends.4
How to answer. 'Compare and contrast' asks for both what they share and where they differ — an answer with only the difference cannot reach full marks. Note each speaker in a separate column; each gives a reason, and those reasons are your evidence.

the answer itselfevidence from the textwhy it matters

Both accept that someone may not want a photo online — he says he would take it down if asked — so the disagreement is about who should speak up first. She thinks you should ask before posting: Xiao Shu did not smile and later told her he did not want his family to see him there, and he was too embarrassed to say so himself. Waiting for an objection puts the burden on the person least able to make it. He answers that asking ten people about a photo of ten would mean nobody ever posted anything, and that a photo of everyone having fun together belongs to everyone in it.

FEMALE他不好意思说啊。所以放上去以前问一句不是更好吗?

Is Xiao Ke likely to tell the teacher? Support your answer with reference to the text.5
How to answer. You must decide yes or no — listing what each speaker said is not an answer to 'is she likely to'. Five marks, so justify it: weigh what is stopping her against what is pushing her, and read her last line carefully, because it is not the same as saying no.
Model answer — open after you have written yours
the answer itselfevidence from the textwhy it mattersties it together

Yes, most likely. Her fear is specific — only three girls saw it, so the others will work out who spoke — and she has already tried talking to them twice and been told she was interfering. What pushes her the other way is what she has seen: he has eaten alone for two weeks, and when she asked he said he was fine and then walked away. Her last line is not a refusal but a plan with a condition: she will go to the teacher tomorrow lunchtime and ask whether her name can be kept out of it — she has moved from not knowing to naming a time.

Language and persuasion5 marks · speech
AUDIO
What makes this speech effective? Refer to both its content and its use of language.5
How to answer. 'Both content and language' means two things are marked: what she says, and how she says it. For language, name the technique, quote the Chinese, and say what it does to the listener — naming it alone earns little. Listen for the numbers she opens with, the sentence she quotes from her classmates, the question she asks and answers herself, and how she turns the usual argument on its head at the end.
Model answer — open after you have written yours
the answer itselfevidence from the textwhy it mattersties it together

She opens with numbers she gathered herself — fourteen activities, twenty-four classmates, seventeen who joined none — so the problem is established as the audience's own before she comments on it. She quotes the reason they gave her, 我不会, in their own words, and admits she has said it too, which stops the speech being a lecture. Her example is unusually honest: she joined the choir despite singing badly, was put in the back row, and three months later was still there and still singing badly. She asks the obvious question herself — so why keep going? — and answers it with two gains that have nothing to do with singing: six new people from other classes, and no longer eating alone on Wednesdays. That lets her ask for one thing you expect to be bad at, and she closes by turning the objection inside out: being bad at it does not matter, since you never claimed otherwise.
